According to an article published in the March 11, 2012 issue of PARADE magazine, there was a 173% increase in thyroid cancer cases from 2002 to 2012. Common sources of radiation cited include airport security scanners and dental x-rays. The American Thyroid Association states that "it does not believe that routine dental x-rays lead to thyroid cancer". The use of a thyroid collar during dental x-rays is advised.
